Sweet Poison

Loving this sudden interest in the dangers of sugar. It’s something we have been promoting at Openhealth Clinic for the last four years. Maybe our national obsession with Fat, Cholesterol and Statins has been overstated.

Next time you are in a Supermarket, check the ingredients of say Mayonnaise, against the “Light” version. Yes the fat value may have been reduced by 10-12%, but I bet the sugar content has increased by near on 50%! The taste has to come from somewhere.

Interestingly, it has been shown that Type 2 diabetes is not actually linked to overall calorie intake, but specific sugar calorie intake. It is also proposed that rather than satisfying us, the fructose molecule in sugar fools our brains into thinking our stomachs are not full, so we overeat! From someone that has had periods of minimising overall Carbohydrate intake and simultaneously increasing Protein intake, I can vouch for similar feelings on returning to Carbs.

Anyway, its all good as far as I’m concerned. The more we discuss and research nutrition, the better the understanding, and hopefully the more we can get away from taking Pharmaceutical Drugs and start promoting Health from within our Diet.
